Frequently Asked Questions

[/vc_column_text][vc_toggle title=”What do we do at GI Automotive?”]

  1. When you visit Gi Automotive group for an oil change, our mechanics will inspect the amount of oil in your vehicle to let you know if it was low or full.
  2. We will put your vehicle on our hoist, remove the oil plug and drain out all the old oil and remove your old oil filter.
  3. We will install a brand new oil filter and refill your oil system with the exact amount and type of oil specified by your vehicle manufacturer.

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”How often should I schedule an oil change?”]You should change your vehicles oil and filter based on your manufacturers recommended service schedule found in your manual.

If you don’t know how often you should change your vehicles oil we will explain it to you and show you where your manufacturer states your vehicles oil type as well as change and filter replacement schedule.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why does my engine consume or burn oil?”]Many vehicles will consume oil whether new or old. Some consume a little, others consume a lot.

The more performance oriented your luxury or exotic vehicle is, the more oil your engine will consume by it’s design, especially if it is a turbocharged or German engine. However American engineered vehicles consume oil as well. It depends how much and how hard you drive your vehicle.

As vehicles age, most engine parts start to slowly degrade, and as a result oil consumption increases, even if you’ve maintained your vehicle it’s entire life. Oil consumption depends on the age of your vehicle, the condition of the engine and more importantly how the engine was designed.

Todays newer lightweight turbocharged engines use thinner, lower-viscosity oils and as a result it’s easier for them to slip past gaskets, seals and rings in the engine that have worn ever so slightly (by design) over time and as a result your engine will consume or burn oil. When you ignore burning oil that is visible in the form of smoke, it can result in major damage to your car’s engine. It’s important that you let our mechanics know if you’ve ever smelt or seen smoke from your vehicle as it could indicate a bigger problem under your hood.

Common culprits that result in burning oil include worn valve stems, guides and seals, and piston rings, all of which can allow oil to seep into combustion chambers. If engine oil gets in the combustion chamber it will burn, possibly in amounts small enough not to produce telltale blue smoke in the exhaust, but enough to notice when you frequently check the car’s dipstick or electronic oil monitoring system. Our experienced mechanics will help explain and educate you as to why your specific vehicle might be consuming or burning more oil than it should, or will simply reassure you that the amount of oil your vehicle consumes is perfectly normal![/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What engine oil should i be using?”]Should I be using conventional engine oil, a full synthetic or a synthetic blend?

Gi Automotive Group mechanics get this question a lot. For most modern luxury or exotic cars, this really isn’t a question. More and more modern vehicle manufacturers exclusively use synthetic motor oil in their vehicles.

Using regular engine oil risks engine damage and you could even void your vehicles warranty. So don’t resort to guesswork as it could result in a very expensive lesson. Gi Automotive Group’s mechanics will tell you exactly what kind of engine oil your vehicle’s manufacturer requires.

Synthetic engine oils are engineered to be the highest quality motor oil available for your vehicle, for when you want the best protection and performance possible. Synthetic formulations allow scientists to create very specific engine oils at a molecular level which are able to provide superior, more complete protection for your high efficiency and technologically advanced engine than conventional oils can.

The benefits of synthetic engine oils include higher resistance to oxidation and thermal breakdown while ultimately reducing deposit buildup in your engine to ensure maximum fuel efficiently while also extending it’s life.

Please keep in mind, that although synthetic engine oil has been engineered to reduce heat, improve cooling and extend the life of your luxury or exotic vehicle engine, it doesn’t eliminate the need for regular oil changes.

Combustion engines running on gasoline naturally contaminate and stress their engine oil, and for this reason we must regularly change the oil and filter per the manufacturers service schedule found in your vehicles manual. Bottom line: synthetic oil helps keep your engine as close to new as possible for as long as possible, which adds up to you having greater peace of mind on the road.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why does my vehicle need engine oil & filter?”]Did you know that some of the moving metal parts within your vehicles engine never really touch? It’s true!

Many of the moving parts of a vehicles engine are separated by a very thin layer of engine oil. In addition to keeping these parts lubricated and interacting smoothly to reduce wear and tear damage from friction, engine oil is also responsible for keeping your engine cool. As your engine oil circulates throughout the engine, it helps move and reduce some of the heat generated from the combustion process of a gasoline powered engine.

When your engine oil is dirty or running low, it will cause your vehicles engine temperature to rise. Your engine oil is also responsible for cleaning as it lubricates, removing dirt left behind from the combustion of gasoline engines. Your engine oil picks up and transports contaminants and other combustion by-products which are then collected by your oil filter. Not only does dirty engine oil contribute to an increase of heat in your engine, it also reduces the life of your engine and encompassing parts while greatly reducing your fuel economy. With the rising cost of gasoline (especially premium grades) it literally will save you money to regularly change your oil and oil filter as your vehicle manufacturer suggests in your vehicles manual.

When your engine oil becomes saturated with dirt & contaminants and cannot hold any more, the excess dirt builds up as deposits in the engine which will reduce it’s efficiency and life. Ensuring that you perform regular scheduled oil changes will remove dirt & contaminants before deposits can build up, helping keep your engine running more efficiently.

It is important to check your vehicles engine oil supply frequently to make sure that this doesn’t occur. Gi Automotive will show you how to accurately check your engine oil whether via the engine oil dipstick or your vehicles electronic oil life monitoring system.[/vc_toggle][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1562346532188{padding-top: 100px !important;padding-bottom: 100px !important;background-image: url(https://www.giautomotivegroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/1920×1080-call_to_action.jpg?id=1915) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}” el_class=”lightText brownOverlay”][vc_column][vc_column_text]
